“Power, Privilege, & the Purse” was an integrated project that included both 11th grade teams. For the duration of this project we examined our society and the ways in which our privileges impact our experiences and opportunities. We researched educational inequalities, wealth inequalities, past and present perspectives on privilege and power, finances, and loans. We created personal financial plans, researched the pros and cons of various loans, and created graphs as well as infographics to represent the new information we were learning. Additionally, we learned about the Jim Crow era and the New Jim Crow, formed opinions on slavery in the past and present, segregation, and discrimination. We discussed different types of inequities in the U.S. by watching documentaries, reading reports and articles, and researching. We studied education, criminal justice, wealth inequality, gender inequality, immigration, and more. In preparation of our exhibition, students were split into groups that “specialized” in specific topics about inequality in the U.S., collected detailed research on our topics, and wrote position papers based off of that research. We worked as a grade to plan a symposium to exhibit our learning through conversation. Students organized rooms, contacted guest panelist, raised funds, and designed room settings. Our exhibition, “Mind the Gap”, was held on November 19, 2015 at the Vista Community Clinic. We gathered parents, families, friends, and community members together to discuss and encouraged open and respectful conversation about present issues in our society.
